Alumnus: I hope to build others the way he built me

“At EAST, God confirmed His calling for me to serve Him in full-time ministry,” said Samuel Linn. This call was the result of convictions built through classes such as Bible, evangelism, and movement building, and extended times alone with God. He also reminisced, “Dr Keith’s Bible Study Methods’ class taught me the most important skills of studying and teaching God’s Word accurately. Janice Chuang’s training on evangelism pulled me out of my introverted shell to reach out to others.”

Alumna: EAST has a very special place in my heart

Janice Tay, Alumna turned Fund Development Coordinator at EAST

Janice came to EAST through her pastor’s recommendation. The lesson that really stuck with her while at EAST is doing ministry integration through the head, the heart and the hands. Her favourite class at EAST was Bible Study Methods and Hermeneutics and Mentoring Group. “I really enjoy Bible Study Methods class. I learnt to observe, interpret and apply the Bible into my own life. I enjoyed the ladies fellowship in the Mentoring Group and sharing our lives together.”

Janice’s favourite teachers at EAST are Dr Keith Shubert, Rev Jacob Li and Mrs Josephine Goh. Dr Keith Shubert is very knowledgeable. He has a wealth of knowledge and he is a treasure trove of knowledge. Rev Jacob Li is very well-equipped and gives his 100% to his students. Mrs Josephine Goh, her mentoring group leader, is very passionate about mentoring people and has a very “on the ball” personality. like an energiser bunny.

China’s favourite bible

The Chinese Union Version (CUV) Bible which was first published on 22 April 1919, over 101 years ago remains China’s favourite Bible. In today’s #SaturdayGoodRead article which is authored by an EAST Alumna Cynthia Oh (MDiv in Intercultural Studies, 2016), the importance of this version of the Bible and the hard work by many which brought about its completion is illuminated.

Here is a brief extract from the article,

Spanning three decades, it survived major political events such as the Boxer Rebellion, collapse of the Chinese empire and World War I.

The CUV version contributed remarkably to the tremendous growth of the Chinese Church

The translation work involved 16 missionary Bible translators of different nationalities, denominations and mission societies, an even higher number of Chinese translators and assistants, and the crucial support of the Bible Societies.
