Life and Ministry of Paul

Date: 5, 6, 9, 10 May 2022, Online (Zoom)
Speaker: Dr Wilson Lau (Cru Singapore)
No video recording

We all know Paul. But do we really? Do we know his early childhood life, family, education, personality, convictions? Or how he was converted and the implications of that conversion? What motivated him to serve the Lord despite great opposition? What was his mission? How did he do his ministry of evangelism?

“Life and Ministry of Paul” seeks to give biblical answers to the above questions and provide an in-depth glimpse into this unique Apostle. You will enjoy gleaning the precious gems of God’s truth in the book of Acts and the Pauline epistles.

Dr Wilson Lau loves teaching “Life and Ministry of Paul” so much that he has been teaching it yearly since 1988. His sessions are known to be simple, practical and enjoyable.

Serving with Cru Singapore since 1980, he spent many years discipling young people on the various local campuses and teaching at the East Asia School of Theology. He has an MDiv from Trinity Theological College and a Doctorate in Ministry from Asia Graduate School of Theology.

Losing a loved one to death or a breakup, losing your health to an illness, losing your income due to a job loss—these are significant losses in life.

Losses can be subtle or less obvious too, like the loss of one’s freedom, dreams and sense of security—even our collective loss of normalcy since the onset of COVID-19. Losses bring along grief that, when unresolved, impact our life negatively.

Pamela will share helpful hacks to help you grieve and heal well, so that you can be free to be the person you were created to be, and thrive significantly in life.

Note: You do not need to signup for this seminar, simply tune in to ThriveSg Instagram to join.

Pamela Koh has worked with tertiary students for more than 18 years and sees counselling as a means for holistic discipleship. In 2020, she started ThriveSg, the counselling arm of Cru Singapore.

Jesus in Conflict (Jerusalem)

Date: 24 & 25 May 2022, Online (Zoom)
Speaker: Rev Dr Keith Shubert (East Asia School of Theology)
Video recording: Part 1Part 2

Whenever Jesus visited Jerusalem, there always seemed to be conflict. Usually, over the Sabbath Laws, Jesus often contended with both the Pharisee and Sadducee leadership. Home of the sacred Temple and the Jewish Sanhedrin, the Jewish capital also provided the context for the basis of the forgiveness of human sins.

Rev Dr Keith Shubert lived in Jerusalem and studied in various parts of Israel while completing an MA in Historical Geography of Ancient Israel. He later completed a PhD in Bible Exposition. His dissertation focused on the way history, geography, and culture contribute to an understanding of biblical narratives.

Serving with Cru since 1971, he has taught Bible courses in over 30 countries and led study tours in Israel for 20 years. Many have commented that his teaching at the biblical sites brought God’s Word to life. He is the quintessential Bible teacher who frequently says, “The Bible is not for your information but for your transformation.” He is also a resident faculty at East Asia School of Theology.

Practical Christianity

The epistle of James is arguably the earliest writing in the New Testament. As such, it has an importance that must not escape us, for it gives the earliest picture of the church and its teachings and practice.

In this webinar, we will look at the interesting history of James as well as its message to discover how it echoes the teachings of Christ.

Talk One: The Interesting History of the Epistle of James
Talk Two: What is the Message of James?

Bishop Emeritus Robert Solomon was Bishop of The Methodist Church in Singapore from 2000-2012. He calls himself a doctor-pastor, having served previously as a medical doctor, church pastor, principal of Trinity Theological College and president of the National Council of Churches of Singapore.

Dr Solomon has degrees in medicine, theology, intercultural studies, and a PhD in pastoral theology from the University of Edinburgh. He contributed many articles to books, theological dictionaries and journals, and authored 50 books.

Passing Through the Waters

Date: 2 June 2022, Online (Zoom)
Speaker: Rev Dr Stephen L. Martyn (Asbury Theological Seminary) & Josephine Lew (East Asia School of Theology)
Video recording | Resources page

We live in a time filled with many unknowns and unravelling opportunities. When life circumstances cause us “to pass through the waters” of stressful times, how does the living Word of God guide us? Come and learn how to attend to our spiritual formation in the following ways:

  • Abide in God and trust in His providential care during anxious seasons
  • Move beyond the crippling impact of physical and emotional isolation
  • Join with fellow believers to engage in the ongoing mission of God’s Kingdom

Dr Stephen L. Martyn is Associate Professor of Spiritual Formation at Asbury Theological Seminary. He received his Ph.D. in Formative Spirituality from Duquesne University, where he studied under Fr. Adrian van Kaam and Dr. Susan Muto.

He was a United Methodist pastor for 28 years and is well-acquainted with the issues of insulation and isolation in the Christian life. Hence, he emphasises to his students the importance of integrating both head and heart in their ministry.

Josephine Lew, Mentoring Group Director and Lecturer at East Asia School of Theology, is excited about the spiritual formation of women and families. As a certified MBTI coach, she coaches seminarians, working professionals, and married couples to leverage their unique personalities in relationships for greater teamwork.

She and her husband, Benson, teach at East Asia School of Theology and disciple couples in their church. They have three children: Samuel (went home with Jesus), Joylynn and Benedict.
